Hi forum!

I am really just starting out.

But already it seems to be that you can do a lot of the cool 3d shadowing that you might do with a true 3d Modeling software (like Maya ) in photoshop.

For example, can anyone tell me how I could do this sort of box-like shadowing and shading like this:

I did not do this image. I am looking for some advice on how to do this sort of thing. I want to do somethign a little simular.

Hi xarzu,

This effect was created through Illustrator, not photoshop. You can make it through photshop, it’s much harder to do than illustrator.
On a 1-10 scale of difficulty in Illustrator, this is a solid 7.

You could follow a tut and get results like this pretty easily. If you want to create things like this from scratch though. You might want to try starting out with something diffrent.

I’ll begin some design tutorials on the fundamentals of design and go from there. You need to be able to bulid the frame before you can build the pretty shell of a ferrari if you know what I mean.

Cheers,

It would definitely been a tricky thing to do.  That’s something I’m trying to master in Illy… I have a hard time creating anything that looks truly 3D.  I’m good with 3D modeling programs like 3d Studio Max.. but the illusion of 3D is tricky.

I will on the look out for those tutorials Jon!

I’m excited to make them! Please understand this take a bit of time and I’m a full time dad amongst other things. I’ll definately carve out time to make this happen though.

Cheers,

I understand trying to juggle kids for sure.  I work full-time as a Mechanical Drafter during the day, all night and weekends and part of the time while I’m at the day job working on my business, and I have two kids that are about to be 5 and 3 next month.  My husband does the stay-at-home dad thing with them, but since they’ve started school he’s working with me on the business during the days now.  It can get hectic finding time to do anything.. lol.. especially around the holidays.

Actually I do the stay at home dad thing too. I just work my schedule around the late afternoons evenings now. That’s when the good light is for taking pictures is anyway. So my schedule hasn’t changed much at all. I just now wake up to a little girl jumping on me!

Yeah… I’m hoping to make my business a full-time thing within the next 5 years and me and my husband both be able to spend more time with the kids.

That waking up to kids bouncing on you thing is loads of fun huh?  My two have taken to getting up early on Sat and Sun mornings, like 6 or 7 am… the two days I get to sleep in!  Then come Monday morning my husband says he’s having to go wake them up at 8 to get them ready for school and they’re not wanting to get up then.  They’ve done that to me the past couple of weekends.  Is it bad when you start daydreaming about your pillow like it’s a divine vision??!!  ;O)

LOL!
Don’t hate! the same thing happens to me. Our daughter sleeps intil 9 on days that I’m tired and wakes up at the crack of dawn for mom. I don’t even tell her she sleeps in. It would just get her ticked that she doesn’t get to sleep in. smile

My pilow has been a keyboard at times. I actually made a really cool abstract when I fell asleep on my keyboard for about an hour. Could never make something like that awake!

Lol… I guess the kids just aren’t as excited about waking up to see their daddies.... ;O)

I haven’t fell asleep actually on the keyboard before, but I’ve almost given myself whiplash almost falling out my chair.  I just got a new chair at the day job too, one with a high back on it, so I’m dozing off all day now.. lol
