I realize these posts are kind of old… but in case other users are having the same problems with either Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator, here are some quick tips:
No, using the tools incorrectly will not freeze the software… though highly detailed tools can slow it to a crawl on even the most powerful machines. Wait a bit, sometimes 10-15 minutes and sometime it will unfreeze. Just stop pushing buttons and let it finish “thinking.”
Make sure you have a system that can run the software. These programs eat massive amounts of memory. One solution is to allocate a partition of your hard drive (Adobe allows up to 2GB) to acting as a temporary memory (or RAM) for Adobe products. Do a quick internet search on partitioning your hard drive if you don’t know how, and search help files or online for how to set the scratch disks and temporary memory in each respective program.
Save frequently!! As I said.. these programs eat a ton and memory and even the best systems will crash. (Especially on large or complicated files.) Also, if you have newer version of Adobe, you can do some research into Version Cue to help you out. I have also been told that CS3 is able to open temp files that are created when you are saving and it crashes. I have CS2, so I haven’t tried this out yet, but it might help some.
Reinstall your software if you’re having a lot of crashes and problems. You can try a repair install first and see if that works. If not, then completely uninstall using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel of your computer, and then reinstall.
Check for updates. Adobe keeps tabs on their software and problems with it and they tend to release new versions without working out a lot of bugs. They will regularly send out updates for the software. Either set it to auto update or manually download them.
I hope this helps out any of those unlucky graphics designers that are ready to take a bazooka to their computer after 10 hours of work when Adobe crashes.. :O)
